Do braces hurt?

Thinking about getting dental braces but worried that they might hurt?

Dental braces are an orthodontic appliance that helps fix teeth alignment issues, such as protruding or crowded teeth.

Braces are an effective treatment option, and discomfort or pain associated with them is manageable and temporary. To help set your expectations, here's some information about getting dental braces.

Getting braces - the first day

Getting braces shouldn't be painful. But, of course, people’s tolerance for pain varies.

Your dental team will be there to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. Let them know if you're feeling pain so they can help you feel better.

The procedure can last for one to two hours. Your orthodontist places bands around your back teeth or molars. Expect to feel slight pressure.

The next step is attaching the brackets to each of your teeth, which will later be connected by metal wires. Once the brackets and wires are in place, your orthodontist places elastic bands to secure them.

After your appointment, you should be able to proceed with your day as usual. But, you’ll need some time to get used to your braces. You may also feel some discomfort in your teeth and gums, which can last for about a week.

Eating is likely to feel different too, with your braces on. It helps to choose soft food that doesn't require heavy chewing. As soon as you get the hang of your new oral appliance, you should also be able to indulge in a wider food variety.

Your first week with braces

During your first week with your braces, it’s natural to experience tightness and soreness around your teeth and gums, especially when eating.

You may also experience cutting your tongue if you accidentally run it through your braces.

Taking over-the-counter pain relievers can help ease the discomfort. Sticking to soft food and cold beverages can also help relieve pain.

It may take up to a month for you to adjust to your braces. After a couple of months, you probably won’t think about them anymore.

During periodic adjustments

You need to go back to the dental office for your periodic adjustments. Your dentist evaluates your teeth, tightens wires, and replaces elastic bands for your braces.

After each appointment, you may feel tightness and discomfort in your mouth. It’ll likely feel similar to when you first had your braces put on. But as you progress through your treatment, you’ll also notice your teeth becoming straighter. The tightness you feel in your mouth is one sign that the appliance is doing its job. It’s applying pressure on your teeth to move them to their ideal position.

Weeks after getting your braces tightened, the tension on your teeth is likely to decrease. That’s why periodic adjustments are necessary. Otherwise, your braces will no longer be effective.

Your dental team is ready to assist you if the discomfort or pain doesn't seem to subside.
